The purpose of veneers (shell facings) is to provide various forms of
aesthetic corrective measures for teeth. Veneers are used in the clinics
to correct the following dental conditions: crooked teeth, teeth that
are too short or too small, broken teeth, teeth with an uneven surface
or discoloured teeth which need to be rectified. Veneers are made of full ceramics and are fixed to the tooth with an adhesive. Full ceramic materials have a number of advantages, particularly from the aesthetic viewpoint: no other dental material resembles the substance of natural teeth so closely as full ceramics. It is slightly transparent and can scarcely be distinguished from a natural tooth when light falls upon it directly. In addition, it is well tolerated by the body and is biologically compatible. Discoloration, such as that which always reappears in the course of time after bleaching, is not a problem with veneers. Veneers have an extremely long service life, some of them lasting for up to 15 years and longer. It is important for them to be checked at regular intervals, and to ensure proper prophylaxis. Before the veneer is affixed with an adhesive, the tooth is ground down only as much as is absolutely necessary to achieve suitable tooth alignment. This reduced loss of dental substance is a considerable advantage over other methods, such as that required when grinding down a tooth to fit a crown in which considerably more dental substance is removed. However if the tooth has been damaged or already contains a major filling, veneers are less advisable as a remedy. A crown, or if several teeth are affected, a bridge is more suitable in such cases. Veneers are extremely stable and resistant. However in cases of exceptional loading, such as when teeth are ground together or situations exerting similar forces on the denture, veneers may be damaged. These factors are naturally given appropriate consideration and discussed with the dental surgeon before commencing treatment. Veneers are produced in the associated in-house laboratories at the clinics. In order to take account of all the patient's wishes and ideas, the technician is also present at appointments. The information gained at such sittings, e.g. the required colour or shape, can then be directly implemented by dental technicians in their work.
