There
are several reasons why prophylaxis is a sensible and necessary measure
to retain healthy, beautiful teeth and/or to support convalescence. The
dental clinics therefore have a prophylaxis department which assembles
an individual package of measures to be completed by every patient. All
persons are different, and each individual therefore has his or her own
optimum prophylactic treatment.
Much time is devoted to each individual patient. For example the
development process of such diseases as caries and periodontitis is
explained in detail, for only when patients know the causes of disease
can they more easily act in such a way as to prevent them. You will be
given detailed information on different techniques of oral care
focussing exactly on your own individual problems. You will also receive
concrete proposals concerning certain products which you can utilise at
home. And you will be given information on good, healthy food that is
rich in vitamins and dietary fibre and on those foodstuffs that contain
hidden sugar.
Thorough cleaning of teeth is one of these purposeful prophylactic
measures to remove plaque and other deposits. In order not to put too
much strain on the surface of the teeth, cleaning is carried out with
the aid of ultrasound. The teeth are then polished to prevent deposits
forming again quickly. Any projecting fillings and crowns must be
replaced as required, because this is where plaque deposits are
particularly prone to form; such locations can also not be reached very
easily with the tooth-brush. The dentin is also improved by applying
lacquer and gel in the context of fluoridation measures.
Besides measures aimed at selective prophylaxis, a patient's own
individual risk factor is also determined with respect to caries and
periodontitis. The following issues are taken into account:
- previous formation of caries and tendency to plaque deposits
- analysis of saliva
- examination of gingival pockets to check for pathogens which may
be treated with medicines
Analysis of saliva also includes identification of bacteria which can
cause caries in order to block these by medical treatment. In addition
the saliva flow rate, i.e. the quantity of saliva produced over a
certain period of time, is also examined.
