Treatment of periodontitis commences in the dental clinics at the
so-called "initial sitting". This treatment forms the foundation for
optimum oral hygiene. Plaque is removed and periodontal pockets cleansed.
At the same time, any factors hindering care of the teeth are rectified:
damaged crowns are replaced by long-term temporary dentures and any
projecting filling edges corrected. You will also be given instructive
tips on which oral hygiene measures need to be maintained in order to
combat the signs of periodontitis successfully. This is then followed by mechanical periodontal treatment. The diseased tissue is removed from the pockets and the roots freed of any deposits. Whenever the pockets are deeper than four millimetres, the gums are opened and cleaned by surgical means. If osseous tissue has degenerated considerably as a result of periodontitis, there are several possibilities to regenerate the bone. On the one hand it is possible to implant synthetic replacement material by operation, and on the other hand it is also possible to make use of endogenous bony substance from the patient's own body. The jawbone is shaped in such a way that the gums again enclose teeth and bone firmly. Treatment of periodontitis is also supported by the selective use of medicines; before this commences, the latest microbiological methods are used to determine which pathogens are the cause of your infection. In order to ensure long-term success of this therapy, appointments should be made at regular intervals for prophylactic treatment in the dental clinics.
