Besides caries, parodontitis, or periodontitis as it is better called,
is one of the most frequent causes for lost teeth. Considerable
importance is therefore attached to consistent periodontal treatment in
the dental clinics. Periodontitis results from bacterial infection, such as that which occurs when dental plaque is not removed. Periodontal pockets are formed between a tooth and the surrounding gums in which bacteria harmful to tissue can collect. Periodontitis attacks all the gingival tissues supporting the tooth and can destroy them over a period of time. If the infection remains untreated, the teeth affected are gradually loosened in their bed and ultimately fall out. Initial warning symptoms for periodontitis are inflamed or swollen gums, frequent gingival bleeding while eating or when cleaning the teeth, halitosis or a bad taste in the mouth, retracted gums (the teeth appear to be longer) and the neck of the tooth is more sensitive. Healthy gums by contrast have a pink sheen to them, enclose the teeth firmly and display a uniform wave-like profile. Periodontitis does not only directly affect the surrounding teeth. Scientific studies contain warnings of the increased risk of heart disease and stroke in conjunction with periodontitis. Scientists also maintain that under certain circumstances diseased gums can form the basis for diabetes.
