From the medical standpoint, dental implants offer a number of advantages in various ways. Thus, for example, when fixed into place, an implant can prevent bone degeneration, because the bony tissue in the jaw gradually disintegrates if it is no longer subjected to load.

Unlike other forms of denture, the forces acting on teeth while chewing and biting are spread over several abutments or substructures in the case of implants. The load applied to individual teeth is thus reduced, which in turn lowers the risk of teeth becoming loose with their resulting loss.

Dental implant - osseotiteImplants are thus also a good solution for patients suffering from loss of teeth due to periodontosis (Periodontitis). As periodontosis frequently attacks the entire tooth retention mechanism, preserved teeth may also become weakened and loose. Traditional methods, such as bridges and crowns, would place an excessive load on the remaining teeth and thus cause them also to be lost. Before treatment with implants can commence, any existing signs of periodontosis must thus have been remedied and completely healed.

A further advantage over bridges and crowns is that the dental substance of healthy teeth is retained, for in order to fix bridges and crowns into place a relatively large amount of enamel must be removed.

The implants employed in the clinics are extremely well tolerated as they are made of titanium. Titanium is a bio-compatible substance which does not cause any rejection or allergic reactions in the body. Titanium is also a material that has high durability properties.

Dental surgeons in the clinics have specialised in the field of implantology and have many years' experience in this sector. All operations performed are thus of the extremely low-risk nature. In addition, it is particularly convenient for the patient to have this treatment performed under general anaesthetic.

Extensive medical anamnesis is conducted in the clinics prior to inserting implants in order to organise an individual plan of treatment. Any factors contradicting dental implants will be carefully considered. These include serious diseases to internal organs (kidney, liver, heart), any incidents of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, a weakening of the immunological system, severe tendency to haemorrhaging, nicotine abuse and the like. In addition, jaw growth must have been completed. The lowest age limit varies from patient to patient.

It must then be determined whether there are any possible high-risk factors precluding an operation (for example, an earlier heart attack), or whether the patient is allergic to certain drugs. This is followed by an exact analysis of the oral/mandibular-maxillary status, of the condition of the jawbone, the jawbone structure and the location and shape of the alveolar ridge.

In cases in which the level of bony substance is too low to retain an implant safely, the bone is first regenerated. This takes place either several months before the dental implant is inserted or directly in the course of implantation, depending on the individual condition of the jawbone.

To regenerate bony substance, a granulate consisting of two components - a so-called bone transplant (bony tissue taken from the patient's own jawbone) and a bone augmentation mineral (Bio-Oss®) - is used. Autohaemotherapy is also applied to exert a positive effect on bone regeneration. Autologous blood is mixed with a thrombocyte concentration extracted from the patient's own blood for this purpose.
