Aesthetic dental treatment: bleaching to obtain bright, beautiful teeth.

Dental clinics in Ostrhauderfehn and Wiesbaden - bleachingBleaching or the whitening of teeth enables stubborn stains and discolorations to be removed at the dental clinics.

All teeth may change colour in the course of time. Deposits resulting from tea, red wine, coffee or cigarette smoke darken the natural colour of teeth, frequently making them unattractive. Many pigments penetrate into the enamel and cannot be removed by normal dental care or hygiene. However it is not only such external factors which influence the shade of a tooth's colouring. Hereditary predisposition, possible damage to teeth, the taking of certain medicines or drugs and the natural process of ageing also darken teeth.

In the bleaching process, a peroxide gel is applied to the teeth affected. This chemical substance penetrates down to the dentin layer (below the enamel), causing an oxidation reaction (oxygen release) with the pigments. These pigments are then "destroyed" and are no longer visible to the human eye. The tooth thus appears brighter and lighter in colour.

Several factors need to be considered before bleaching is carried out. Patients are naturally informed in detail of these factors at the dental clinics. For example, the patient may not exhibit any symptoms of caries or periodontitis. Fillings are checked and the teeth thoroughly cleaned.

Studies have shown that bleaching is not harmful to one's health. Nevertheless, the teeth are more sensitive during the course of treatment. Patients with sensitive teeth should therefore refrain from undergoing this form of treatment. In such cases in particular, a suitable alternative is provided by veneers (shell facings made of ceramics). It must also be remembered that fillings in teeth are not whitened by bleaching and that discoloration may reappear after some time.
